Suhas Roy
1936-2016Suhas was born in 1926 in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
In 1953 he received his diploma in painting from Indian College of Art and Draftsmanship, Calcutta. From 1956 - 1966 he studied Graphic Art under S.W. Hayter at Atelier 17, Paris and Murals at L’ Ecole Superior Das Bank Art, Paris. From 1971 - 1973 he became the principle of Indian College of Art and Draftsmanship. From 1974 - 1981 he was a lecturer in painting at Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan. In 1993 - 1994 he became a Reader in painting. From 1994 - 1996 he became a Professor in painting. In 1960 he became a member of Society of Contemporary Artists, Calcutta.
Suhas had several solo exhibitions:
In 1964 he had one man show at Arts and Prints Gallery, Calcutta. In 1983 he had a solo at Calcutta Arts Gallery, Calcutta. In 1986 he exhibited solo at Dhoomimal Art Gallery, Calcutta and Chitrakoot Art Gallery, Calcutta. In 1986 and 1988 he showcased solo at Genesis Art Gallery, Calcutta. In 1992 he had one man show at Centre Art Gallery, Calcutta.
He participated in several National and International Group exhibitions:
From 1953 - 1958 he participated in Youth Art Exhibitions in Czechoslovakia, Prague. In 1958 he participated in the Annual Exhibition at the Indian College of Arts and Draftsmanship, Calcutta. He took part in First All India Graphics Exhibition organized by Group B. In 1988 - 1989 he showed in ‘Art for City’ child relief and you at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai. In 1988 he participated in Karnataka Chitralekha Parishad, Bangalore. He participated in: Exposition of La Cite Internal Des Arts, Paris and Exposition Des Arts Etogere Boursiers des Goutin in Paris, France. He participated in Smithsonian printmaking workshop, New Delhi. He took part in the 7th International Biennale Exibition of prints in Tokyo, Japan. He participated in Exhibition of Graphics by Indian Artist in Poland. He showcased in Recent Art in India organized by Lalit Kala Academy. He took part in Third Triennial in India. He participated in various Art camps organized in New Delhi and Calcutta.
Suhas won several awards:
In 1957 - 1958 he won an award in the Annual Exhibition at Indian College of Artists and Draftsmanship. He won a Merit Certificate from Birla Academy of Arts and Culture, Calcutta.
Suhas passed away in 2016.
