Sudhir Patwardhan was born in 1949 in Pune, Maharashtra.

In 1972 he received his degree in Medicine from the Armed Forces Medical College in Pune. In 1973 he moved to Mumbai. From 1975 to 2005 he worked as a radiologist in Thane. In 2005 he became a self taught full time artist.

Sudhir has held several solo shows in India and overseas:
In 1979 and 1990 he exhibited solo at Art Heritage in New Delhi. In 1979, 1984, 1989, 1992 and 1994 he showcased solo at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai. In 1988 he had a solo exhibition at Pokharan, Thane. In 1995 he had a solo exhibition at Gallery Chemould, Kolkata. In 1999 he exhibited solo at Design Centre in Thane, Vadehra Art Gallery in New Delhi and Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai. In 2001 he exhibited solo at Sakshi Gallery, Bangalore. In 2002 he had a solo exhibition at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai. In 2004 he had exhibited solo at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi; ABC Gallery, Vadodara and Sakshi Gallery, Mumbai. In 2007 - 2008 he exhibited solo Citing the City at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai; Sakshi Art Gallery, Mumbai; Gallery 88, Kolkata; Faculty of Fine Arts in Vadodara and Shridharani Gallery, New Delhi.

He has participated in several group shows in India and overseas:
In 1974, 1975 and 1976 he participated in Bombay Art Society shows at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai. In 1979 he took part in Madhya Pradesh Kala Parishad, Bhopal. In 1981 he participated in Place for People at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai and Ravindra Bhavan, New Delhi. In 1982 he took part in the Inaugural Exhibition at Roopankar in Bharat Bhavan, Bhopal. In 1984 he took part in Ten Artists at Gallery 7, Mumbai. In 1985 he showcased in ‘Thirty Artist in the collection of Richardson Hindustan’ at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai. In 1986 he participated in Festival of India, Centre George Pompidou in Paris, France. In 1987 he participated in Coup De Coeur in Geneva, Switzerland. In 1988 and 1989 he took part in Art for CRY, Mumbai, Kolkata, New Delhi & Bangalore. He participated in ‘The Richness of Spirit’ at Kuwait National Museum. In 1989 he took part in a group exhibition at Egyptian Academy, Rome. In 1989 he took part in Timeless Art exhibition and auction by Sotheby’s, Mumbai. In 1990 he participated in Gadyapavva Exhibition at Gallery Chemould, Mumbai. In 1992 he participated in Journeys within Landscapes at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai. He participated in the Silver jubilee exhibition at Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkata. In 1993 he participated in ‘Shraddha Samarpar’ at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai; ‘Parallel Perception’ at Sakshi Art Gallery in Mumbai and ‘Trends & Images’ at CIMA in Kolkata. In 1994 he participated in a group show ‘Drawing 94’ at Gallery Espace, New Delhi. In 1995 he participated in Indian Contemporary Painting auction by Christie’s, London. He took part in Postcards for Gandhi SAHMAT in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Kolkata, Chennai, New Delhi and Mumbai. In 1996 he participated in ‘Urban Signal, Shifting Images’ at Birla Art Gallery in Mumbai and Birla Academy of Art & Culture in Kolkata. He took part in Contemporary Indian Painters 96’ at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai. He participated in ‘A Tree in my Life’ at the Village Art Gallery, New Delhi.

In 1997 he participated in ‘Image Beyond Image’ at Glenberra Art Museum and New Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore and Mumbai. He took part in ‘Indian Contemporary Art Post Independence’ at Vadehra Art Gallery, New Delhi. He participated in ‘Epic Reality’ at Contemporary Art Museum. He took part in ‘Charcoal & Conte’ at Birla Art Gallery, Mumbai. In 1998 he participated in Indian Contemporary Art at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai. He showcased in Anniversary Exhibition at Chitram Art Gallery in Kochi and Artists for Sustainable Development at Gallery Chemould, Mumbai, New Delhi, Kolkata and Bangalore. In 1999 he participated in group exhibitions in New Delhi, Kochi and Mumbai. In 2000 he had a joint exhibition with Ajay Desai at Gallery 7, Mumbai. In 2005 - 2006 he had a joint show with Gieve Patel at Museum Gallery and at Bose Pacia, New York. In 2008 he had A Retrospective of Drawings 1971 - 2006 at The Guild Gallery, Mumbai. In 2000 he participated in ‘Their Story’, VAHI at Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, Mumbai and Kochi. In 2001 he took part in ‘Century City’ at Tate Modern in London, UK. In 2002 he took part in group exhibitions in New Jersey, USA, Calcutta, etc. In 2003 he participated in ‘Said & Unsaid’ at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai and Vadehra Gallery, New Delhi. In 2004 he took part in ‘Edge of Desire: Recent Art in India’ at Art Gallery of West Australia and at Asia Society in New York, USA. In 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 he participated in many group shows in New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, New York, Switzerland, Belgium and Australia. In 2010 - 2011 he participated ‘Figure/Landscape Part I & II’ at Aicon Gallery, London. In 2013 he participated in ‘Zones of Contact: Propositions on the Museum’ at Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, New Delhi. In 2015 he was showcased in ‘Meher II, Art with a Heart’ at Gallery 7, Mumbai.

Sudhir lives and works in Mumbai.
