Sakti Burman
1935Sakti Burman was born in 1935 in Kolkata.
He grew up in what is now Bangladesh. In 1951 Burman attended the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Kolkata. In 1956 he went to study art at Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts, Paris. Burman returned to India to understand Indian art with a new perspective. He visited Ajanta, Ellora, Amaravati and Konark, and his style is truly affected by those masterly creations.

In 1954 he showcased solo in Art & Industry, Kolkata. In 1956 he showcased in Ecole Nationale Superieur. In 1958 he had a solo at Galeries des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France. In 1961 he had a solo exhibition at Piccadilly Gallery in London, UK. In 1962 he had one person show at Ashoka Gallery, Kolkata and at AIFACS, New Delhi. In 1963 he exhibited solo at Galerie Saint Placide, Paris. In 1964 he exhibited solo at Scott and Faure Gallery, La Jolla in California, USA. In 1965 he had a solo at Kunika Chemould, New Delhi. In 1967 he showcased solo at Piccadilly Gallery in London, UK. In 1970 he exhibited solo at Galerie Doucet et Coutureau in Paris, France. In 1971 he showcased solo at Galleria Nuovo Sagittario in Milan, Italy. In 1973 he had a solo at Galleria Nuovo Sagittario in Genoa, Italy. In 1974 he had a solo at Galerie des Beaux Arts in Paris, France. In 1975 he showcased solo at Galerie de l’hotel Meridian in Nice, France. In 1977 he had a solo at Pundole Art Gallery, Mumbai and Kunika Chemould, New Delhi. In 1978 he exhibited at Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkata and Chanakya Art Gallery, New Delhi. In 1979 he exhibited solo at Galerie Gerard Sauret Monsempron-Libos, France. In 1980 he had one man show at Galerie de Bernardi, Aachen, Germany; Musee de Blios, France and Musee de Villeneure–sur Lot, France. In 1981 he exhibited solo in Galerie de la Rue Ancienne in Geneva, Switzerland. In 1982 he had solo in Musee Denon, Chalon-sur Saone, France. In 1983 he exhibited solo in Galerie Sagar in Zurich, Switzerland. In 1984 he had one man show at Musee Denon, Chalon-sur Saone, France; Galerie d’Arte de La Place Beauvau in Paris, France and Kunsthandlung Osper, Cologne, Germany. In 1985 he showcased solo at Galerie Schemes, Litte in France; Centre Culturel de Saint Denis, France; Maison de Van Gogh, Auvets-sur-Ore, France and in Galerie Untenberg in Zurich, Switzerland. In 1986 he had a solo in Galerie Das Kunstabinett, Goch, Germany. In 1988, 1990 and 1993 he had solo exhibitions at Pundole Art Gallery, Mumbai; Chitrakoot Art Gallery, Kolkata and in Paris and Brussels. In 1992 he exhibited solo at Centre of Contemporary Art in New Delhi and Paris. In 1998 he showcased in Japan, China and Hong Kong. In 1997 and 1998 he showcased solo in Osaka, Japan and France. In 1998 and 1999 he showcased in Paris and New York. In 2001, 2006 and 2008 he exhibited solo at Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkata. In 2006, 2008 and 2012 he exhibited solo at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai. In 2008 he exhibited solo at Art Alive Gallery, New Delhi, Art Musings, Mumbai and Aicon Gallery, New York. In 2010, 2011 and 2012 he exhibited solo at Pundole Art Gallery, Mumbai, Chennai and Bangalore. In 2014 he showcased ‘Magical Moments: bronze sculptures at Arushi Arts, New Delhi. In 2016 Burman's works were exhibited in one man show titled as 'Subconscious Expression' at Gallery 7, Mumbai.
Burman has had several group shows:
In 1964 he participated in Emerging Indian Artists in Kolkata. In 1975 and 1983 he participated in a group shows at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai and in group shows – Moscow, Russia, France and New Delhi. In 1982 he participated in Vth International Triennale, New Delhi. From 1995 - 2000 he participated in various group shows in New Delhi, Japan, Kolkata, Hong Kong, China and Mumbai. From 2000 - 2003 he took part in group shows in New York, Mumbai, Kolkata, Baroda and New Delhi. In 2004 he participated in group exhibitions in New York and UK. From 2005 - 2009 he took part in several group shows in New Delhi, Mumbai, UK and UAE. From 2010 - 2014 he participated in group shows in New Delhi, UK and New York.
Burman has received many awards:
He has won the Prix des Etrangers, Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris; the Medaille Arts, Science et Lettres in Paris; the Medaille d’Argent de Montmorency; the Medaille d’Or, Salon des Artistes Francais, Grand Palais in Paris; and the Prix de la Ville de l’Isle-Adam in France.
He currently lives and works in Paris.
