Jogen Chowdhury was born in 1939 in Faridpur in Bangladesh.

In 1960 Jogen received his degree from the Government College of Art and Crafts in Kolkata. In 1965 - 1967 he received the French Government Scholarship. He studied at Ecole Nationale, Superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.

In Paris he attended William Hayter's Atelier 17. In 1968 he returned to India. In 1970 he joined the Calcutta Painter’s Group. In 1970 his first collection of poems ‘Hridoy Train Beje Othey was published. In 1975 he was the founder member along with some leading artists of Gallery 26 and Artists' Forum in Calcutta.

He had several solo shows:
In 1963, 1965, 1994, 1995, 2006 and 2014 he exhibited solo in Kolkata. In 1967 he had a solo exhibition at Galerie du Haut Pave in Paris. In 1968, 1970, 1990 and 2012 and 2013 he exhibited solo in Chennai. In 1972 he had a solo exhibition at AIFACS in New Delhi. In 1976 and 1998 he had solo shows in Paris. In 1979 he had a solo exhibition at Gallery 7 in Mumbai. In 1977, 1981, 1994 and 2007 Jogen exhibited solo in New Delhi. In 1982, 1983, 1988, 1990, 2012 and 2013 he exhibited solo in Baroda, Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Chennai. In 1992 he had a solo exhibition at Nandan, Kala Bhavan in Santiniketan. From 1996 - 2001 Jogen had several solo exhibitions overseas in Japan, Amsterdam, Berlin, Paris and Singapore. In 2002 he showcased solo at Bose-Pacia Modern in New York, USA. In 2008 he had a solo show in Mumbai.

In 1957 and 1965 he participated in a group exhibition at Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi. In 1967 he participated in an exhibition, Paris. In 1978 he took part in a group exhibition in Mumbai. In 1979 he participated in ‘Asian Art Exhibition’ at Fukuoka in Japan. In 1980 he showcased in Hamburg. In 1982 he exhibited in ‘Contemporary Indian Paintings’ at Hirshhorn Museum, Washington DC, USA. In 1971 and 1975 he participated in 2nd and 3rd Triennale India at Lalit Kala Akademi in New Delhi. In 1976 he took part in ‘International Exhibition at Cagnes–sur-Mer. In 1978 he participated in 15th Sao Paulo Biennale, Brazil. In 1982 he participated in a workshop on Indian and German artists in Germany and Italy. In 1986 he took part in the 1st international Festival of Art in Baghdad. In 1992 he participated in ‘Confluence’ Indo–French Art Camp in Kolkata. In 1994 and 1995 he participated in ‘Contemporary Indian Prints’ at Maltwood Art Museum, Canada and in ‘Seven Contemporary Artists’ at Le Monde de’l Art in Paris. In 1995 he exhibited in New Delhi. In 1996 he exhibited at Whitleys Art Gallery in London. In 1997 he took part in ‘Watermark’ at Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai. In 2000 and 2001 he participated in group shows at National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi and Kolkata. In 2001 he participated in group shows in Berlin & Kolkata. In 2002 he participated in group shows in Kolkata, New Delhi, Hong Kong, Mumbai & London. In 2008 he exhibited in Kolkata and New Delhi. In 2009 he exhibited at Aicon Gallery and Grosvenor Gallery, London. In 2010 - 2011 he showcased at Aicon Art Gallery, London. In 2008 he participated in Art Singapore 2008, Singapore. In 2008 - 2009 he took part in ‘Modern India’ in Valencia, Spain. In 2009 and 2010 he participated in various group shows in New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai. In 2009 he took part in the Annual exhibition, La-Mere, Kolkata. In 2010 he exhibited ‘Roots’ in Mumbai and Chennai. In 2010 he exhibited in New Delhi and Ahmedabad. In 2010 he participated in ‘Contemporary Printmaking in India’ at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai. In 2010 he participated in ‘Master’s Corner’ at Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai and India International Art Fair in New Delhi. In 2010 he participated in ‘Art Celebrates 2010: Sports and the City’ at Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi. In 2010 he participated in ‘Time Unfolded’ at Kiran Nadar Museum of Art in New Delhi. From 2011-2013 he took part in various group shows in New Delhi, Mumbai, and Vadodhara. In 2011 and 2013 Jogen exhibited in New Delhi and Singapore. In 2012 he participated in ‘Art for Humanity’ at Coomaraswamy Hall, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, Mumbai. In 2013 - 2014 he participated in group exhibitions in New Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and took part in ‘Ode to Monumental: Celebration, Visuality, Ideology’ by SaffronArt at Lalit Kala Akademi in New Delhi and Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai. In 2013 he took part in ‘Ideas of the Sublime’ at Lalit Kala Akademi in New Delhi.

In 1966 Jogen was awarded Prix le France de la Jeune Peinture in Paris. In 1986 he received an award at 2nd Biennale of Havana in Cuba. In 2001 he was conferred Kalidas Sanman by Government of Madhya Pradesh. In 2003 Jogen was a Jury Member at Singapore Biennale Exhibition of Art at Singapore.

Jogen lives and works in Santiniketan.
