Ganesh Pyne was born in 1937 in Kolkata.

In 1959 he received his diploma from Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata. In 1991 and 1994 he exhibited solo in New Delhi.

He had solo shows:
In 1992 he had a solo exhibition in Kochi. In 1990 he showcased Illustrations (Book on Wajid Ali Shah) in Kolkata. In 1998 he exhibited solo ‘Ganesh Pyne: A retrospective1952-1958’ at CIMA, Kolkata. In 2000 Pyne exhibited solo ‘Drawings on Mahabharata 1967 to 1987’ at National Gallery of Modern Art in Mumbai. In 2005 he had a Retrospective 'Ganesh Pyne: A Pilgrim in the Dominion of Shadows' at The Museum Gallery, Mumbai. In 2006 and 2010 he had solo shows in Kolkata.

Pyne participated in several group exhibitions in India and overseas:
In 1968 and 1971 he participated in ‘I International Triennale’ and ‘II International Triennale’ in New Delhi. In 1968 he exhibited in group shows in Prague. In 1970 he took part in Paris Biennale in Paris. In 1975 he participated in a group show in France. In 1978 and 1980 he participated in several group shows in Japan. In 2010 and 2011 he showcased in New Delhi. In 2011 and 2012 he exhibited in ‘Time Unfolded’ and 'Crossings: Time Unfolded, Part 2' at Kiran Nadar Museum of Art in New Delhi. In 2011 he participated in group shows at San Jose Museum of Art, San Jose, USA and Singapore. In 1957 Pyne participated in Commemorative exhibition in 1957 at Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata. In 1961, 1969, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1993, 1995, 1998, 2000-2005, 2008-2011 he participated in group shows in Kolkata. In 1970, 1975, 1982 and 1986 he exhibited in Germany. In 1970 he participated in a group show at Royal Academy of Arts, London. In 1996 he exhibited at Whitley’s Art Gallery, London. In the years; 1972, 1989, 1993, 1995, 1997, 2002, 2003, 2008, 2010 and 2012 he participated in group shows in New Delhi. In 1980, 1989, 2001, 2009 and 2012 he took part in group shows in Mumbai. In 1993 and 2004 he exhibited in group shows at Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai. In 1982 he took part in ‘Modern Indian Paintings’ (National Gallery of Modern Art) at Hirschorn Museum, Washington DC, USA. In 1997 he took part in ‘Tryst with Destiny: Art from Modern India’ at Singapore Art Museum, Singapore; participated in ‘Color of Independence’ at National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi; ‘Image - Beyond Image’ at NGMA, New Delhi; Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkata; Karnataka Chitrakala Parishad, Bangalore and NGMA, Mumbai. In 2009 he participated in ‘Bharat Ratna! Jewels of Modern Indian Art’ at Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. In 2005 he participated in a group show in Singapore. In 2008 and 2009 he took part in group shows in Bangalore.

Pyne passed away in 2013.

He was exhibited posthumously in India and Overseas. In 2013 and 2014 he was showcased in 'A Tribute to Ganesh Pyne' in New Delhi; 'Ideas of the Sublime' at Lalit Kala Akademi in New Delhi; 'Transition' in Kolkata and 'Germinal' at India Art Fair in New Delhi.

He 1978 he was nominated ‘Artist of the Year’ by Sangeet Shyamala, Kolkata. In 1985 he was honoured with Shiromani Puroskar from Asian Paints, Kolkata. In 1997 he was awarded Gagan Abani Puroskar at Visva Bharati, Santiniketan, West Bengal. In 2003 and 2009 he was conferred D.Litt. by Kalyani University, West Bengal and Netaji Subhash Open University, Kolkata. In 2008 he received Lifetime Achievement Award from Star Ananda, Kolkata. In 2011 he received Raja Ravi Verma Award from Government of Kerala.
