Jatin Das
1941Jatin Das was born in December 1941 in Baripada, Mayurbhanj in Orissa.
In 1962 he graduated from Sir J. J. School of Art, Mumbai where he was studying under Professor S. B. Palsikar.
He has had several solo exhibitions:
In 1962 he exhibited solo at the Indo-American Society Gallery, Mumbai. In 1964, 1987, 1995 and 2007 he had solo shows at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai. In 1966, 1973 and 1982 he exhibited solo at Taj Art Gallery, Mumbai. In 1965 he had a solo show at Gallery Chemould, Kolkata, In 1968 1973, 1976 and 1978 he exhibited solo at Kumar Art Gallery, New Delhi. From 1974 – 1979 he had solo exhibitions in New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Baroda, Mumbai, Amsterdam, West Germany, Birmingham and London. In 1983, 1985 and 1986 he had solo shows in Chennai, New Delhi and at the Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkata. In 1991 he had` ‘Retrospective 1968-90’ at Rabindra Bhavan Gallery, Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi. In 1993, 1994 and 1996 he exhibited solo in Mumbai, Chandigarh and Bangalore. In 1999 and 2009 he exhibited solo at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi. In 2002 he exhibited ‘Retrospective: 40 Years of Drawings’ at AIFACS, New Delhi and showcased ‘Works on Paper’ at NGMA, Mumbai. In 2005 and 2006 he had solo shows in Greece, Dubai and he exhibited ‘Journeys across Foreign Lands’ at Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi. In 2007 he exhibited ‘Charged Figures’ at CIMA Gallery, Kolkata and had a solo show at AIFACS, New Delhi. In 2009 he exhibited solo at the Chelsea Arts Club, London and at The Artists Alley Gallery in San Francisco, USA. In 2010-11 he exhibited ‘Hand-held Space' at the Museum Gallery, Gallery Art and Soul in Mumbai. In 2011 he had solo shows at Lalit Kala Academy, Chandigarh and at Galleri Astley, Sweden.
He has participated in several group exhibitions:
In 1964 he participated in the National Exhibition of Art at Lalit Kala Akademi in New Delhi. In 1971 he participated in the Septieme Biennale de Paris at Parc Floral De Paris in Paris. In 1971, 1976 and 1978 he participated in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Triennale at Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi. In 1972 he took part in ‘The Creative Eye’, an exhibition of photography at Rabindra Bhavan, New Delhi. In 1978 he participated in the National Kala Mela at Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi. In 1979 he participated in the Asian Arts Exhibition at Fukoaka Art Museum, Japan. In 1984 he took part in the National Exhibition of Art, Lalit Kala Academy, Chennai and participated in the 15th International Art Show, Tokyo Biennale, Japan. In 1985 he took part in the 2nd Biennale in Cuba, Havana and participated in the 3rd Asian Biennale in Bangladesh. In 1989 he took part in group shows at Museum of Modern Art, Seoul in South Korea & Ukohama Museum in Japan. In 1990 he participated in Tribute to Van Gogh, a Centenary Show at Vadehra Art Gallery in New Delhi. In 1992 he participated in a group show at Dhoomimal Gallery, New Delhi. In 1995 he took part in a group exhibition, Tribute to Gandhi at Little Theatre Gallery, New Delhi. In 1995 he took part in the Indo-Korean Show at AIFACS Gallery, New Delhi. In 1997 he participated in Enduring Lines at Dhoomimal Art Centre, New Delhi. In 1997 he particpated in group shows at Vadehra Art Gallery and NGMA, New Delhi. In 2003 and 2005 he participated in Mappings and Silk Route at ABS Bayers Gallery, Baroda. In 2011 he took part in 'Masterclass' at Dhoomimal Art Gallery, New Delhi. In 2013 he exhibited Art for Uttarakhand, in honour of flood victims. In 2014 he took part in the Pink Filly Breast cancer campaign at Art & Soul Gallery, Mumbai. In 2017-18 he was showcased in Nudes: assorted works at Gallery 7, Kalaghoda in Mumbai.
He has received many awards:
In 1965 he received the Governor's Award from The Bombay Art Society, Mumbai and the Maharashtra State Art Exhibition Award in Mumbai. In 1976 he received an award from AIFACS, New Delhi. In 1989 he received a one year Senior Fellowship by the Government of India. In 2006 he received the Utkala award in Kolkata. In 2007 he received the Order of the Star of Italian Solidarity by the Italian Government in New Delhi and he also received the Bharat Nirman Award. In 2012 he received the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India.
Jatin lives in New Delhi.
