Gulam Mohammed Sheikh was born in 1937 in Gujarat.

In 1961 he completed his M. A. from M. S. University, Baroda. In 1966 he passed out from Royal College of Art, London.

He had several solo shows:
In 1960 and 1969 he had solo exhibitions at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai. In 1960 and 1971 he exhibited solo at Kunika Art Gallery, New Delhi. In 1963 he exhibited solo at Taj Art Gallery, Mumbai. In 1985 he had a retrospective ‘Returning Home’ of works from 1968-1985 at Centre Georges Pompidou, Musee National d'Art Moderne, Paris. In 1988 he exhibited solo at Art Heritage, New Delhi. In 1995 he showcased solo, ‘A Tree in My Life’ at The Village Gallery, New Delhi. In 1996 he exhibited solo at Sakshi Gallery, Mumbai. In 1998 he exhibited ‘Kahat Kabir’ and ‘Tree of Life’ at Vadehra Art Gallery, New Delhi. In 2001 he showcased ‘Palimpsest’ at Vadehra Art Gallery, New Delhi; Sakshi Gallery, Mumbai and Tao Art Gallery, Mumbai. In 2008 and 2011 he showcased Kaavad at M. S. University, Baroda and Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi.

He participated in several group shows:
In 1957, 1968, 1972, 1981, 1985, 1992, 1993, 1996 and 2002 he participated in various group shows at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai. In 1971 he participated in a group exhibition at NGMA, New Delhi. In 1972 and 1978 he took part in group shows at Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi. In 1970 he participated in ‘Contemporary Indian Prints’ at Smithsonian Printmaking Workshop, New Delhi and participated in ‘ Graphics 70’ at Group 8, New Delhi. In 1974 he took part in ‘Contemporary painting of India’ at Belgrade, Warsaw, Sofia and Brussels. In 1978 he participated in ‘Six Who Declined the Triennale’ at Kumar Gallery, New Delhi. In 1992 he took part in the Silver Jubilee Exhibition, Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkata. In 1993 he participated in ‘Wounds’ at NGMA, New Delhi. In 1997 he took part in 'Tryst With Destiny: Art from Modern India 1947-97' at Singapore Art Museum, Singapore. In 1997 he participated in ‘Major Trends in Indian Art’ at Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi. In 1997 he took part in ‘Indian Contemporary Art’ at NGMA, New Delhi. In 1999 he was showcased at NGMA, New Delhi – Jehangir Nicholson Collection. In 2002 he participated in ‘Photo-Transcendent’ at Bose-Pacia Modern, New York. In 2003 he took part in ‘Contemporary Miniatures: India and Pakistan’ at Fine Art Resource, Berlin. In 2003-04 he participated in ‘A Celebration of Color’ at NGMA, Mumbai. In 2005 and 2007 he showcased ‘Edge of Desire: Recent Art in India’ at Asia Society Museum, New York; Tamayo Museum, Mexico City; Museum of Contemporary Art, Monterrey, Mexico; Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto and NGMA, Mumbai. In 2008, 2009 and 2010 he participated in group shows at Walsh Gallery, Chicago. In 2010 and 2011 he took part in group shows at Sakshi Gallery, Mumbai. In 2013 he participated in a group show at Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi. In 2015 he participated in a group show, ‘Remembering Bhupen’ in Vadodara.

He has received several awards:
In 1962 he won a national award from Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi. In 1963 he won a 3 year Commonwealth Scholarship from the Royal College of Art, London. In 1983 he received the Padmashri from the Government of India, New Delhi. In 1988 he received residency at Civitella Ranieri Center, Italy. In 1998 he received the Ravishankar Rawal Award from the government of Gujarat. In 2002 he received the Kalidas Sanman from the government of Madhya Pradesh.

Gulam lives in Baroda.
