Saumen Kar was born in 1970 in Gobardanga, West Bengal.

In 1995 he received his degree in Bachelor of Visual Arts from Calcutta University. In 1997 he received his degree in Master of Fine Arts from M. S. University, Baroda.

Saumen had several solo and joint shows:
In 1996 he exhibited solo a modern sculpture exhibition at Fine Arts Gallery, Baroda. In 1997 he had a solo show at Contemporary Art Gallery, Nazar at Baroda. In 1997 he had a joint exhibition at Bhabnagar, Gujarat. In 1997 he had a joint exhibition at Fine Art Faculty Gallery, Baroda. In 2001 he had a joint sculpture show at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai. In 2002 he had a joint show at Rottery Art Gallery, Surat. In 2006 he had a solo exhibition at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai. In 2012 he exhibited a solo show at Chemould Art Gallery, Calcutta. In 2012 he exhibited at the India Art Festival, Mumbai. In 2014 he exhibited solo at Academy of Fine Arts.

He has participated in several group shows:
From 1992 - 1994 he exhibited in the Annual Exhibition of the Govt. College of Art & Craft, Calcutta. In 1994 he took part in a group show at Academy of Fine Arts, Calcutta. In 1994 he took part in a group show at the West Bengal Govt. Annual Exhibition. In 1996 he took part in the 40th National Art Exhibition in Bangalore. In 1996 and 1997 he participated in the South Eastern Zone Cultural Centre, Nagpur. In 1998 he took part in a group show at AIFACS, New Delhi and took part in the All India Mini Sculpture Exhibition in Bangalore. In 1998 he participated in the Gujarat Lalit Kala Academy annual exhibition in Ahmedabad. In 2013 he exhibited in group shows in Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai. In 2014 he participated in Prayas at Chemould Art Gallery, Kolkata.

Saumen has received several awards:
From 1993 - 1995 he received certificate of Merits from Govt. College of Art and Craft, Kolkata. In 1995 he won the Annual Exhibition Award from Govt. College of Art and Craft, Kolkata. In 1998 he won the Annual Exhibition Award from All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society, New Delhi. In 1999 he won the Kalaprasamsa Award from Lalit Kala Parishad, Visakhapatnam. In 1999 he won an award at the All India Exhibition in Andhra Pradesh.

Saumen lives and works in West Bengal.
